About the publication

A point of view, between two cities.

The Southwood Independent is an independent selection of stories, cinema, art and photography. It looks outward from Vancouver and Johannesburg, with an interest in how people live, what images reveal and whose experiences deserve more attention.

The editorial approach is shaped by a background in film and a curiosity about people, images and the places we call home.

What independent means here

The selection reflects the editor’s judgement. This is a Southwood Media publication, with its own choice of subjects and perspectives. Original reporting remains with the publishers linked beside each story.

How we use AI

AI assists with drafting summaries and perspectives. The factual summary and editorial interpretation are presented separately, and readers can follow the source link to assess the original reporting.

What we choose

Cinema with a distinct voice. Images that reward attention. Decisions that shape our cities. Stories from South Africa seen with care from abroad. And Arsenal, unashamedly only Arsenal, followed through the club’s official reporting.
